Call to Action for Julius Jones

November 21, 2021
Fellow Pilgrims,

Your prompt action is urgently needed today.
Julius Jones is scheduled to be executed by the State of Oklahoma in less than a week, on Thursday, November 18th.

Julius has been on death row for over 20 years despite myriad facts pointing towards his innocence (details at the link below): https://innocenceproject.org/julius-jones-death-row-oklahoma-what-to-know/

The Parole Board reviewing his case voted 3 to 1 to grant clemency and commute his sentence to life with the possibility of parole. The Board Chairman himself, Adam Luck, expressed reservations about the verdict: “I believe in death penalty cases there should be no doubt and put simply, I have doubts in this case. I cannot ignore those doubts, especially when the stakes are life and death.”

The Governor of Oklahoma, Kevin Stitt, is currently deliberating on the case and whether to grant clemency.

By the time next week’s newsletter comes out, we’ll know if these efforts have been successful. And we will then dig into the systemic racism embedded in our justice system (and even acknowledged by the Supreme Court). Because as Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: "There comes a point where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.”
